More than a nursery, this has been the beginning of our family story. A place for wonder, for growth, and for the smallest footsteps that will one day leave the biggest marks on our hearts.
When we purchased this mid century modern home, what I loved most was being surrounded by towering trees and the hush of the forest. There was something about that stillness that felt like it needed to be honoured, especially in a room meant for a new life.
When it came to designing Joaquin's nursery, I knew exactly where to start. I was inspired by my favourite children's book, Where the Wild Things Are. A story about imagination, about wonder, about a child who is both wild and deeply loved. My dear friend and incredible interior designer Anna Villanay brought that vision to life, designing this space to capture that fleeting moment where imagination and new life begin.
The wall mural, a botanical forest scene in soft greens and grey tones feels timeless and a little magical. Once the mural was in, the rest of the room came together. The crib is a natural timber and white frame that I could genuinely see living in a grown up bedroom one day. The nursing chair is a curved boucle in warm taupe that I would happily put in any living room. The rug is a deep cream shag that feels extraordinary underfoot. The pendant light has a fabric shade with an amber stem detail that casts the most beautiful warm glow.
What I learned doing this, even as someone who thinks about design every single day, is that designing a space for someone you love that much is different. It made me even more conscious of the decisions I make for my clients. Every home has someone in it who cares deeply about how it feels. That is something I never want to take for granted.
Joaquin's nursery is the most personal room I have ever designed. And somehow, it is also one of my favorites.
